New event showcases Sugar House’s artsy side

In Salt Lake City, attending the monthly "gallery stroll" of artists’ work can mean driving from The Gateway district to the Avenues to the 15th and 15th neighborhood. Merchants in Sugar House are offering another, more walkable, option for art enthusiasts.

The Sugar House Art Walk presents its fourth event on May 11, with eight galleries and a dozen small businesses displaying art ranging from pottery to pastels. And the venues are all within a five- to 10-minute walk of one another, said organizer James Adelman.

The art walk is held on the second Friday of each month, 6-9 p.m., from April through November. (The Salt Lake City Gallery Stroll is held on third Fridays year-round.)

The Sugar House Art Walk Association held its first two events last fall. The event returned this spring with more venues and more activities. Adelman expects live entertainment — such as artist demonstrations, dance lessons, fashion shows and music — to be a part of each art walk. In July, organizers are planning a Sugar House Jazz Festival to coincide with the event. The May art walk will have a bicycle theme and attendees are encouraged to pedal to the different venues.
