Kennecott gets air quality permit for Cornerstone expansion project

Kennecott Utah Copper has cleared a regulatory hurdle to its ambitious Cornerstone expansion project, receiving a permit Monday that will allow it to increase the amount of material it moves from 197 million tons a year to 260 million tons. The permit from the Division of Air Quality is just one of more than two dozen the mining company is required to obtain for its Cornerstone proposal, which is designed to extend the life of the mine to 2039.

The mining company will be required to secure separate approvals for changes to other aspects of its operations as it relates to the Cornerstone Project, such as the transition at its power plant and to the expansion of its waste-rock impoundment.  Deseret News
