West Jordan council extends telecommunications tax

West Jordan residents will continue to pay a telecommunications tax, at least through June 2016.
The City Council voted Wednesday to extend the tax and direct the $1.5 million the tax generates into the general fund. The money was previously set aside for the city’s pavement management program.

The decision, which also included the utility franchise fee, was the result of months of debate and public input. The council has heard from hundreds of residents on the issue, said Mayor Melissa Johnson, at three public hearings and through countless emails and phone calls.

Most were in favor of continuing the tax, said Councilman Clive Killpack, but were divided on whether to keep the money in pavement management or divert it to the general fund.

The council made its intent regarding the telecommunications tax clear Wednesday, but will still have to formally vote on an ordinance to make the tax extension official. That vote should come in the next few weeks. Salt Lake Tribune
