Utah tenders Black Diamond incentive to expand

Utah has offered outdoor products company Black Diamond Equipment an incentive of as much as $395,500 to expand in the Salt Lake area. The incentive, approved Tuesday by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development Board, involves the addition of 55 people to Black Diamond’s operations in Holladay, state officials say. Black Diamond already employs more than 200 people at the mid-Valley facility, which serves as a manufacturing, distribution and retail center.

But according to its application, two business units are set to relocate to Holladay: Black Diamond’s Connecticut-based parent Clarus Corp., and an affiliate, Sacramento, Calif.-based Gregory Mountain Products Inc. The new jobs will pay an average of $52,045 annually, including benefits.

Although most of the new positions will be added not long after two business units relocate, the incentive is payable in the form of a tax credit over a 10-year period. The company must meet certain criteria to receive the tax break each year. The Salt Lake Tribune
